Crime Data Reports in Criminal Justice Student’s Name Institutional Affiliation Crime Data Reports in Criminal Justice The United States utilizes a wide range of strategies to regularly monitor and review the various forms of crime. Among the strategies is the use of three primary sources of crime data that provide information on crime problems. The three major sources of data include the Uniform Crime Reports (UCR), the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) and the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) respectively (Walsh, 2011). The data gathered by these sources are particularly beneficial in the sense that it is useful in the formulation of crime prevention and intervention strategies. Equally important, the data is useful in understanding the patterns and trends in crime, and measuring extent and degree of crime throughout the U.S. The UCR began in 1932 by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to gather crime data reported to the police. The data contained in the UCR is compiled by the FBI from over 18,000 police departments. Police departments provide crime about data to the FBI, in turn, the FBI compiles the data to produce the UCR. The UCR classifies the compiled data into two categories; namely: Part I offenses, containing eight index crime categories and Part II offenses (Strom & Erica, 2017). Part I offenses include aggravated assault, robbery, arson, homicide, and larceny-theft. The UCR data also features data about the city, county and the geographical location of the crime. Part II consists of 21 less serious crimes like disorderly conduct and liquor law violations. The major drawbacks of UCR are the omission of unreported crimes since it only contains crimes reported to the police. UCR can also contain reporting errors caused by human error or intentionally falsified information. NIBRS was instituted in 1982 as an improved version of the UCR.
