The conditions are characterized by frustrating effects on the quality of life such as personal distress and significant interruption of day-to-day activities. The disorders are also referred to as mental disorders. Mental disorders usually have a recognizable pattern of behaviors and mental symptoms. The symptoms that are associated with mental disorders are behaviors and characteristics that can appear in normal individuals. For example, among the most widely recognized signs of mental illness is depression. Normal individuals are likely to experience a feeling of extreme sadness at some point in their lives, which can be wrongly misinterpreted as depression. There are high rates of misdiagnosis of psychological disorders owing to the lack of specificity in the definition of the symptoms. Mental disorders were initially thought to be untreatable. However, with advances in diagnosis and treatment opportunities, individuals who are diagnosed with these conditions can lead healthy lives that are devoid of personal distress (CrashCourse). There are different types of mental illnesses, where most share common symptoms and can, therefore, be categorized under the same subclass. Currently, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) of mental disorders is used to diagnose and classify mental illnesses. The current edition, DSM-5 describes the criteria that should be used in diagnosing a psychological disorder (Sccclibrary). It also has information on different conditions that have similar symptoms with a certain mental disorder. The most common mental disorders include anxiety disorders, phobias, eating disorders, personality disorders, sleep disorders, and mood disorders.
