Type-2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder that is featured by persistent hyperglycaemia and polyuria. The present article portrays the complications and therapeutic challenges of type-2 diabetes mellitus. A systematic review approach was undertaken to present the findings of this research. Type-2 diabetes mellitus results from the reduced sensitivity of the insulin receptor towards insulin. The severity of type-2 diabetes mellitus is governed by the degree of insulin resistance exhibited by the insulin receptor. Hence, type-2 diabetes mellitus is featured by increased insulin resistance, decreased insulin sensitivity, a decline in insulin production and eventually a failure of pancreatic-beta cells to produce insulin. Type-2 diabetes mellitus is typically managed through a combination of therapeutic interventions and lifestyle modifications. Different pharmacological and non-pharmacological regimes are recommended for managing type-2 diabetes mellitus. The management of type-2 diabetes mellitus is mainly influenced by the presence of comorbid disorders. Hence, therapeutic regimes should be tailored with respect to the underlying disorders that are associated with type-2 diabetes mellitus. GLP-1 analogs and DPP-IV inhibitors are indicated for the management of type-2 diabetes mellitus. GLP-1 analogs and DPP-IV inhibitors have exhibited promising results in controlling hyperglycaemia and in improving insulin sensitivity. Future studies should be conducted to optimize the dose and duration of non-pharmacologic interventions for alleviating tye-2 diabetes mellitus.
