29 March 2018 Brief historical Context of the Mainstream Media and School Shootings Given the consistent rate of atrocities committed by the various school shootings in the United States over the past ten years, debate is raging across the country with respect to policies related to gun control. According to information acquired from the Every Town gun safety movement, over 30 shootings have occurred in the nation just in 2018 alone. This same organization defines such a crime as "any time a firearm discharges a live round inside a school building or on a school campus or grounds" (Cuddy). These acts fit the definition regardless of the casualties or wounded citizens. Twelve of the 33 resulted in either injury or death while other incidents reported by the mainstream media included shootings in which no one was hurt and suicides in which there was no attempt to hurt another person. For the past five years, over 300 school shootings have occurred and been reported in the United States at an average rate of one per week according to Every Town. The mainstream media recorded the shooting at the Florida high school in February to be the third deadliest recorded since the year 1999 (Cuddy). Furthermore, the assault on the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School performed by former student and 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz resulted in 17 staffers and students becoming deceased. During the massacre of Virginia Tech in the year 2007, a university senior fired and murdered 32 people whilst wounding 17 more in two separate cases before committing suicide. Conversely, the Sandy Hook Elementary School catastrophe saw Adam Lanza, 20, butchering 27 individuals whose majority included children (CNN). Despite outcry from the mainstream media, there have been numerous warnings issued by outlets claiming that these horrific acts are just the tip of the iceberg.
